I gotta be honest, I couldn't listen to the song all the way through because it was pretty much the same movement over and over again. The pianos you use were literally always on the same note, and then there's that one sequence that repeats ad nauseum which, while it does lend towards variety and breaks up the monotonous dual piano, doesn't do a whole lot past that.

Now, don't be discouraged. It wasn't too long ago that I was a beginner with FL Studio in a similar position as what you find yourself in. What I would recommend, rather than making original stuff right, is to do some easy covers/remixes/whatever you wanna call them, and get your sea legs, so to speak. If you tell me what it is you're looking to do using FL Studio, I can help you in how to do it. I have been using the DAW for six years, after all, so there are benefits to experience, even if it's only self-taught.

Personally, I'd classify myself as a nerd for these reasons:

1. I really like anime. I regularly go on Hulu or Netflix and take a look at what's on there, and I'll watch some of the stuff that isn't necessarily mainstream. I especially love English subbed with the original Japanese voice acting, and I make it a point to explain why I love that, but I don't force it on anyone. Admittedly, it does annoy me a small amount when people say that Goku or Luffy or Naruto or whatever male anime lead character sounds like a woman just because their voices are by women, but all I can really do there is leave it at, "They do not." There ain't a whole lot I can do beyond that.

2. I'm a huge scifi fan. Gundams, BattleMechs, starships, alien planets, doesn't matter what archetype they fall under, I love 'em, but especially mechs and space. GaijinGoombah actually had a video on mechs pertaining to east vs west, the differences between the two and the upcoming real-world robotics showdown, and just on the mere mention of that last one I blurt out, "No fucking way! That is awesome!"

3. I'm technologically and mechanically oriented as a person. I like the idea of taking apart a controller to see how it works, and I put my current computer together from old parts my brother gave me. I have a 12-gauge Winchester shotgun, and I can take that thing apart easily, and put it back together just as easily, both of which help with cleaning it after a day at the range. I regularly work on my family's cars to earn some spending money. I enjoy all of these things, even working on cars, regardless of the money involved.

4. I know for a fact that Battlefield 1942, the first in the series, was released in 2002, but while it had driveable vehicles, the first FPS game that did was actually Activision's game Battlezone, released in 1998, which was a hybrid between FPS, RTS, and tank simulation. As it happens, Battlezone also has area-specific damage, limited as it is; shoot a guy in the head or the cockpit (which glows with the pilot's sniper rifle), and that kills them instantly.

5. I have been targeted by kids in high school for my nerdiness. In my Fine Art discussion, when I mentioned my fondness for anime, one kid was all, "This class is Fine Art. Anime is not fine art. I can shove my entire finger up my nose." So yeah, there's nerds, there's jocks, there's snobs, and then there's this dork. What made it worse was that my teacher also targeted me, and right as they did that, my grandfather died. So yeah, I've quite a bit of pain associated with visual art, which is why I don't have more than two art submissions.

I was fortunate enough to be born in the 90s, and while I don't have near the knowledge you guys have, or even a nerdy collection, I still consider myself a nerd. I would hope my view towards myself is shared among others.

The love of nerdy things! Glad you listened! thanks for the review!

At my current skill level, I can only dream of making music that sounds this good, and my music arguably sounds good as it is! Probably the one thing I see about it is that it's fairly repetitive, but then again, it's only about three minutes long, so no big deal there. I mean, if I were to take a star off, or even a half, just because of that, that'd just be being picky as fuck on my part, and I'm not about to do that.

It's a good sounding piece that's way beyond my skill level. Let's just leave it at that and continue to dance to it, eh?

FacuTaberner responds:

yes!!!!

Personally, I think it's pretty good. I think more what SniperSnake was referring to was the pure saturation of sound, but of course that's simply because you seemed to be using only one instrument, and playing multiple notes with one instruments at the exact same time tends to make the overall sound overpowering when you're synthesizing music. Other than that, I see no problems.

Maybe perhaps later on you'll go over this again, mess around with more instruments? I guarantee that it'll sound much better after all this time.

Lone-X responds:

Thanks for the awesome review! I appreciate it!

Pretty good for a first.

Now, I saw that you used a program called "Reason 4," as you called it. Have you considered other music programs, like FL Studio? I use FL Studio myself, and I highly recommend it.

gnar2d2 responds:

yeah i used to rewire Reason into FL, something you might be interested in? idk check it out. alot of DAW's have the rewire capability. i just got my hands on a program called cubase and im gonna start using that with reason rewired into it. Reason doesn't support vst so i figured it was time to use more than 2 synths and a drum machine haha.

thanks for the view :D

Could be better.

I honestly don't like it done with a piano. It's been done so much with one that it just gets annoying after a while. Nobody ever has a different take, they just keep trying to make it JUST LIKE THE GAME. -_-

I saw one guy attempt to make a metalized version using FL Studio (I could tell because of the sound of the guitars), and the only thing missing with his was some proper drums, although the bass guitar did pretty well there. I based mine on a midi and his cover, and I'm proud of my work because it turned out the way I wanted it to.

Perhaps if you take a country or bluegrass spin on this song, it might sound better. It's also plausible a techno-type remix would do the song good. Or maybe you could try your own metalized cover. Bottom line is that this style, for me, was old hat a while ago.

On a side note, it sounded kinda grainy like one of those really old records from, say, the Old West times. I'm guessing this is because you had some of the instruments switch notes really quickly while leaving a small delay in between the notes.

DrMackFoxx responds:

Well, this is a cover, not a remix. My and John Weeks' intent is to give these tracks a new feel with different instrumentation and some other minor edits instead of, more or less, rebuilding a classic almost entirely from scratch. The review is appreciated, nonetheless. Thanks. :)

If you looking for a better remake of this track, I would recommend "Sonic 2 - Hillstop" By Hating4AM http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/liste n/379754

Just make sure you remove any spaces from the URL above. I have no idea why spaces are added randomly to URLs around here.

Holy shit!

Even better than the original, dude. And that's hard to get.

Free 10 and 5. Take a look at my stuff?

rtnario responds:

Indeed. And thanks for thinking so, I specifically remember that I really worked hard on this one :D Thanks!

Let's see what you have...

Again, wrong timing.

The "go" scratches and the percussion don't have the same timing as the Axel F melody, so it sounds out of place. Also, the melody has a few notes off.

full-metal-albatross responds:

for fuck sake, I said that I scratched go randomly and then added stuff to it after. Obviously it isn't going to sync up and I could have fixed the axel f theme but I'm lazy and I said fuck it. Sometimes you have to look at something and say, fuck it. Kind of like when you look at your mom.

Some of it's got the wrong timing.

When the percussion comes in, it's too fast for the melody. You should really make sure that it sounds right when you put in percussion. For example, while I may use the same plugin for every piece of mine (and yes, you're right on that part), the melody and the percussion have the same timing.

Now, aside from this little paragraph here, I've stayed on subject. I'm pretty sure you appreciate that when others do it. So do they, and so do I. I didn't rate it a four because you're an idiot or something like that (although you're not very wise), I rated it that because the piece could use some improvement.

full-metal-albatross responds:

This "piece" is a piece of shit and I know it, any wise man can see that. Why bother reviewing it?

VERY nice!

I'm surprised you got a crap score, this is awesome! Free five.

PrfctPhntm responds:

Oh, really? Thanks man. When I get around to it, I'm going to see if I can add a whole bunch of stuff and make it all rock-n-roll esque.

But I appreciate the 10 and 5, ^_^'
